Best Schools in Coalville, Utah: A Parent's Guide to North Summit Schools
If you're thinking about a move to Coalville, Utah, here's the short version on schools: Coalville is home to the North Summit School District, and every public school in the district sits within a few blocks of each other near Main Street. That's one of my favorite things about raising kids here. My family's kids go to school in North Summit, and you'll see the same families at the football game, the school play and the county fair.
Here's every school that serves Coalville families, plus answers to the questions parents ask me most when they're house hunting.
Public schools in Coalville (North Summit School District)
| School | Grades | Address |
|---|---|---|
| North Summit Preschool | Preschool | 65 S Main St, Coalville, UT 84017 |
| North Summit Elementary | K–4 | 240 S Beacon Dr, Coalville, UT 84017 |
| North Summit Middle School | 5–8 | 111 E 100 S, Coalville, UT 84017 |
| North Summit High School | 9–12 | 111 E 100 S, Coalville, UT 84017 |
The district office is at 65 S Main Street in Coalville, (435) 565-6575.
North Summit Elementary covers kindergarten through 4th grade. It's a small-town elementary where teachers often know the older siblings, the parents and sometimes the grandparents too.
North Summit Middle School covers 5th through 8th grade. That's a little different from the 6–8 setup you'll find in Park City, so if you're moving from elsewhere, your 5th grader will be heading to the middle school building.
North Summit High School covers 9th through 12th grade. Home of the Braves. It's a small high school, which means kids can play a sport, be in the musical and show at the fair without having to choose just one.
Charter schools within driving distance
There are no charter schools located in Coalville itself. Any Utah student can apply to a public charter, though, and these two in Summit County are the closest:
| School | Grades | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Weilenmann School of Discovery | K–8 (plus a preschool program) | 4199 Kilby Rd, Park City, UT 84098 |
| The Winter Sports School | 9–12 | 4251 Shadow Mountain Dr, Park City, UT 84098 |
Both are tuition-free public charters. The Winter Sports School runs April through November so student athletes can train and compete all winter. Plan on driving, since charter schools don't provide busing from Coalville.
A parent's guide to Coalville schools
How do school boundaries work in Coalville?
Easier than almost anywhere along the Wasatch Front. North Summit School District has one elementary, one middle school and one high school, so if a home is inside the district, your kids attend those three schools. The district serves Coalville, Hoytsville, Wanship, Henefer, Echo and the surrounding ranch country in northern Summit County.
The only real question is whether a property is in North Summit or in a neighboring district. Parts of Summit County with Park City or Kamas addresses are served by Park City School District or South Summit School District instead.
How do I check which schools a specific address feeds?
Don't rely on the mailing address or the ZIP code alone. A Coalville mailing address can cover a lot of ground out here. Before you write an offer, call the North Summit School District office at (435) 565-6575 with the exact property address and ask them to confirm. It takes five minutes. When I'm working with a family, I do this check for you on any home we're serious about.
Can my child attend a school outside our boundary? (Open enrollment)
Yes. Utah has open enrollment, which means you can apply for your child to attend a school in a different district. A few things to know:
- Early enrollment window: Applications submitted between December 1 and the third Friday in February are for the following school year.
- Late enrollment: You can apply outside that window too, for the current year or the next one.
- Space matters: Approval depends on whether the school has room in that grade or program.
- You drive: Parents handle transportation to an out-of-boundary school.
Charter schools have their own application process, separate from open enrollment. Check each school's website for dates.
How do I register my child for North Summit schools?
New students can pre-register online through the district's new student registration page. The district office can tell you exactly which documents to bring, so give them a call at (435) 565-6575 if you have questions.
How do schools affect home values in Coalville?
Here's where Coalville is different from a big suburb. Because every home in the district feeds the same schools, you won't see the "this side of the street costs more" boundary premium you find in some Wasatch Front cities. What does move value here is land, water, views, distance to town and the kind of property it is. A home with acreage and room for horses is priced very differently from a house on a town lot, even though the kids ride the same bus.
What schools do give Coalville is staying power. Families who move here for small classes and a close-knit community tend to stay, which keeps the town steady.
Are Coalville schools a good fit for families moving from a bigger city?
If you want your kids to be known by name, yes. North Summit is small by design. Kids who would sit on the bench at a 6A school get to play here. The tradeoff is fewer course options than a large high school, so if your student needs a specialized program, ask the district or look at the Park City charter options above.
